How to Plan a Private Switzerland Itinerary: The Architectural Framework
Why standard luxury itineraries fail in the Alps, how to sequence geography and elevation, and how to balance panoramic rail with private chauffeured transit.

4 NIGHTS · Basel
Basel's institutions, architecture and design culture
CUSTOMIZE JOURNEYBasel rewards concentration.
Art, Design & Basel is structured as four nights in a single base on the Rhine, allowing the city’s art institutions, architecture and cross-border design landscape to be approached without changing hotels.
The journey is anchored by two very different cultural environments. Fondation Beyeler in Riehen brings modern and contemporary art together with Renzo Piano’s museum architecture and park setting. Across the German border, Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein approaches design through exhibitions, collections and a concentration of publicly accessible architecture.
Between those visits, Basel itself remains central. The Old Town, the Rhine and the city’s public architecture provide the connective tissue, while the programme deliberately limits the number of major institutional visits in a single day. The result is a cultural stay with enough space to look rather than a checklist of museums.
01
Days 1–5
Curated Experience
A relaxed orientation through Basel's publicly accessible Old Town and Rhinefront, including historic urban fabric and exterior landmarks.
Curated Experience
A visit to Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, combining its modern-art collection, current exhibitions and Renzo Piano-designed setting, subject to current public admission and ticketing arrangements.
Curated Experience
A cross-border day excursion from Basel to the publicly accessible Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein for its design exhibitions, VitraHaus, Schaudepot and architectural landscape, subject to current campus opening and admission arrangements.
A cultural journey works better when there is enough time to look.
Fondation Beyeler and Vitra Campus each deserve their own day because they ask for different kinds of attention. One is centred on art, exhibition-making and museum architecture; the other brings design collections and buildings together across a cross-border campus.
Both are public cultural institutions. Exhibitions, ticketing, guided formats and opening schedules can change, and access should be arranged according to the institutions’ current public programmes unless something separate has actually been confirmed.
The final full day therefore remains deliberately open. Kunstmuseum Basel, independent galleries, public architecture and time along the Rhine can be added according to weekday schedules and the traveler’s interests rather than being fixed into every version of the journey.
Art Basel is handled separately. If travel coincides with the fair, tickets, access, accommodation and reservations require their own date-specific planning; no VIP or preview access is assumed as part of this journey.
Basel · 4 Nights
Basel is deliberately a single-base journey.
Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is selected because its position on the Rhine and beside the Old Town keeps the city itself present throughout the stay while providing a consistent base for short journeys to Riehen and across the German border to Weil am Rhein.
Four nights allow museum days, architectural walks and open time to sit within one residence rather than introducing another hotel move. Its role is continuity rather than becoming a separate attraction within the cultural programme.
